What to Harvest

Most World of Warcraft gold guides provide the same basic instructions for herbalism and they are largely correct, but you can still make the most of the situation if you know how. The lower level herbalism nodes are generally not going to make you a fortune, but they are fortunately easy to find, despite random spawning. They are easy to access and usually not surrounded by a crowd of mobs.

The higher level nodes are where the problems usually start up. They are incredibly random in spawning to start with and what’s more, they tend to be hard to find when someone else is already in the area. When you reach upper levels and start looking for black lotuses, dreamfoil, or ghost mushrooms, best of luck to you, but these are the herbs you should be harvesting as, when you do get them, they are incredibly valuable.

Where to Harvest

There are not necessarily any specific zones where harvesting is best for herbs. Your early searches will take you to places like Stranglethorn Vale and Westfall, but later you will be scouring zones like Un’Goro Crater and the Plaguelands looking for rare spawns. In Outland, your options are a bit more clear even with the rarity of spawns. This is because at higher levels, you can actually harvest the mobs themselves. The Bog Lords and plant mobs in Zangarmarsh and Terokkar Forest for example are great sources of rare drops, including Unidentified Plant Parts (a reputation item), motes of Life, and any number of high level herbalism nodes. Most World of Warcraft gold guides give little information on these possibilities, but if you farm on Bog Lords for an hour, you can almost always expect to come away with at least 75-100 gold, especially if you pick up the various mushroom spawns in the area that are used for Sporeggar reputation.

Herbalism is an interesting profession with multiple possibilities. World of Warcraft gold guides will often recommend that you choose Mining and Herbalism as your primary professions for good reason – they are highly profitable and interchangeable. In zones like Nagrand you will undoubtedly find both nodes in your loops as you farm and can vastly increase your gold making potential as a result.

The Right Mobs at the Right Time

The goal when you reach Legion Hold should not simply be to make money by killing whoever you encounter and selling their drops. There are particular mobs in here that can be that much more valuable.

First, enter Legion Hold in Shadowmoon Valley and then go deep within the camp until you find the three pillars in the center being drained by the Warlocks there. These warlocks are usually in groups of three themselves and will respawn incredibly quickly, making it possible to kill them and have new ones at the ready for you to kill when you are done – a continuous loop of mobs with high drop rates of valuable items.

To give you an idea of what this often times get for you, these mobs will often drop Fel Armaments at a rate of about 5-7 per hour (even higher at times), Marks of Sargeras at 30-50 an hour and a whole slew of other simple drops like Netherweave Cloth (at least 100 an hour), cash, and greens. The occasional rare or even epic drop has been known to happen as well, making this an easy grinding location for anywhere between 150 gold and 250 gold an hour – even higher if you can manage a rare drop.

A Surprisingly Low Population

The reason this area is so useful for farming is that there are so few people here at many times. It is almost inexplicable really and is likely because by the time most players are ready to take on Legion Hold at Level 69 or 70, they are also ready to take on Level 70 instances and raids and buy their flying mounts. Whatever the reason, this is an area you can enjoy all by yourself if you get there at the right time.

Colbat Ore

Cobalt ore is the first of the new ores and is available in Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord, Dragonblight, and Grizzly Hills in solid amounts with smaller numbers in other zones. You will find a slew of different nodes in each zone, with each node dropping between 1 and 4 ores along with Crystallized Earth, Fire or Shadow, the latter two being relatively valuable at Auction.

Saronite Ore

Saronite ore is the second common ore in Northrend and is incredibly valuable across the board and can be found in every zone above the starting zones in Northrend. You’ll find that the ore is in both normal and rich veins and will provide you with between 1 and 3 ores for regular and 2 and 5 for rich veins along with the same crystallized elements. A good run through of Saronite can make you upwards of 250 gold an hour.

Titanium Ore

Titanium Ore is the extremely rare ore in Northrend. It cannot be prospected but because it is used in Titansteel which has numerous different uses in high level crafting, you’re going to find that Titanium ore sells for huge amounts of gold per stack – upwards of 200 or more on good days. The ore shows up on nodes of both Cobalt and Saronite in any one of the zones you may enter and is thus not settled into any one spot (making it harder to track).

Titanium ore is the ultimate goal but both Saronite and Cobalt will both help you get your gold making rate up much higher with a mining skill of at least 400 to work with. While you can no longer cash in on the early stages of the expansion, the gold making opportunities at Level 80 are still quite viable and incredibly profitable.
